Sidereal and nakshatra calculations

Sidereal & Vedic-Oriented Astrology API

Build divisional charts, dasha displays, and sidereal tools with a Vedic-oriented developer API. Cosmic Ephemeris provides an explicit sidereal mode with Lahiri, Raman, Krishnamurti, Fagan–Bradley, Yukteshwar, Sassanian, True Chitra, True Revati, True Pushya, Galactic Center at 0 Sagittarius, and Galactic Alignment/Mardyks ayanamsas, sidereal charts, Moon nakshatra and pada data, and a Pro timeline endpoint for supported bodies. Separate beta APIs provide twenty-four divisional charts, North/South Indian SVGs, Vimshottari through optional depth 4 and instant Panchang elements.

Which Vedic-oriented calculations are supported?

On zodiac-option chart routes, send "zodiac": "sidereal" to opt in. Cosmic Ephemeris subtracts the selected date-aware ayanamsa from tropical longitude and returns the sidereal result. If the ayanamsa is omitted in sidereal mode, it defaults to lahiri. Vargas, varga SVG, Vimshottari and Panchang are always sidereal; select their ayanamsa rather than sending a zodiac field.

Ayanamsas
Lahiri, Raman, Krishnamurti, Fagan–Bradley (fagan_bradley), Yukteshwar (yukteshwar), Sassanian (sassanian), True Chitra (true_chitra), True Revati (true_revati), True Pushya (true_pushya), Galactic Center at 0 Sagittarius (galactic_center_0_sagittarius), Galactic Alignment/Mardyks (galactic_alignment_mardyks)
Nakshatra geometry
27 nakshatras × 4 padas
Public date window
1900-01-01 through 2050-12-31

What does the nakshatra timeline return?

The Pro timeline endpoint divides the sidereal zodiac into 108 nakshatra-pada segments and returns contiguous residence intervals. Supported bodies are the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu. A requested interval must be positive, no longer than 180 days, and within the public calculation window.

Timeline output is geometry only. Rahu uses the engine's mean north node, and Ketu is its opposite south node. This endpoint does not calculate dashas or make predictions.

What is outside the current Jyotish scope?

Cosmic Ephemeris is not a complete Vedic or Jyotish astrology system. Sidereal longitude and nakshatra geometry are inputs to many different traditions; they do not encode an entire interpretive or calendrical system. Cosmic Ephemeris currently provides none of the following:

  • Dashas other than the beta Vimshottari method with optional depth-3 Pratyantardasha and depth-4 Sookshma periods
  • Interpretive planetary yoga combinations, shadbala, ashtakavarga, or complete dignity and strength systems
  • Regional Panchanga calendars, festivals or muhurta election calculations beyond the documented instant Panchang beta
  • Vargas beyond the twenty-four documented D1/D2/D3/D4/D5/D6/D7/D8/D9/D10/D11/D12/D16/D20/D24/D27/D30/D40/D45/D60/D81/D108/D144/D150 mappings, or alternative divisional-chart conventions
  • Alternative Hindu-geocentric sunrise conventions or regional calendar rules; the Panchang beta uses the USNO standard horizon model
  • Interpretive, religious, remedial, or certainty-based predictions

Beta D1/D2/D3/D4/D5/D6/D7/D8/D9/D10/D11/D12/D16/D20/D24/D27/D30/D40/D45/D60/D81/D108/D144/D150, Vimshottari, Indian SVG and instant Panchang APIs provide defined calculations, not a complete tradition or predictive certainty. Vimshottari retains its original two-level default; optional depth 3 and 4 add 729 Pratyantardasha and 6,561 Sookshma periods under the same fixed year and birth-balance convention. Panchang returns instant tithi, nakshatra, yoga and karana plus sunrise-based vara and local-date solar events. Latitude is limited to [-88,88], sunrise uses the USNO −50 arcminute horizon at zero elevation, and unavailable or unsupported solar geometry is explicit. North/South Indian SVGs show D1/D2/D3/D4/D5/D6/D7/D8/D9/D10/D11/D12/D16/D20/D24/D27/D30/D40/D45/D60/D81/D108/D144/D150 sign placements, not bhava-chalit. Developers building the other features must define, implement, test, and disclose their own rules instead of presenting Cosmic Ephemeris's coordinate output as a complete Jyotish answer.

Appropriate product uses

Astrologers can work with a developer to build consultation dashboards, sidereal chart displays, and nakshatra learning tools. Specify the ayanamsa and house system your practice uses so those choices remain visible to your clients.

  • Sidereal chart renderers with an explicit, user-selected ayanamsa
  • Nakshatra and pada displays derived from returned geometry
  • Transition calendars for supported bodies and bounded intervals
  • Educational comparison tools that show how ayanamsa selection changes longitude
  • Application-owned Jyotish logic built on a declared, tested coordinate layer
